Curatorial Rational
The underlying inspiration behind my work and passion for art has always been nature. I strive to view the world around me through an artistic lens and often feel most inspired when I am outside observing the complex inner workings of earth. Within my body of work I intend to illustrate the untouched and pure qualities of earth, as well as the interconnection we as humans experience with the natural world. Through many of my pieces, my personal relationship with nature is depicted. This includes my illustration of specific experiences of mine that have left a lasting impression on the way in which I view the world around me. In some works, I explore the understanding of our own small role in the world that can be gained through experiences with nature’s grandeur.
Across various cultures, religions, and ways of life there is the presence of nature´s role and its significance in our human experience. I have always felt as though we possess a co-dependency with the environment that is often ignored and overlooked in our modern technological age. Through each piece in my exhibition, I chose to depict a different aspect, interaction, or relationship pertaining to the way in which humans and nature influence one another. I decided to utilize and experiment with a variety of mediums that I had little previous exposure to. Some of which include block printing, digital collage, and sculpture. My experimentation with these mediums influenced me to continuously evolve and expand the ideas in each of my works including themes surrounding the influence of culture and identity. For example, I chose to explore the unique features of Mexican Culture and its integration of natural elements within various practices and spiritual beliefs.
The way in which I chose to display the pieces in my exhibition is in alignment with my intention for how I wish the body of work to be progressively interpreted by the viewer. Each piece aligns precisely at an axis at the top allowing a fluid movement of the eye from one end to the next, passing over each piece one by one. However, towards the bottom they are arranged in height to slowly ascend like a staircase. I feel this allows them to be viewed individually initially, while slowly building upon one another to create a larger body and reveal the overarching theme surrounding the various expressions of human relationships to nature.
Being able to depict and interpret different elements of the environment is something that I work at almost daily and feel constantly helps broaden my creative perspective. I am captivated by the profound emotional impact that art can have on an individual and even society as a whole. With this knowledge, I am hoping to convey ideas surrounding the beauty of nature as well as the importance of our role in its preservation in order to inspire change and reflection regarding human impact on the planet. Additionally, I would like to encourage a greater appreciation for the bounty that Earth offers in every aspect of life in order to discourage the exploitation of these resources.
